Disability Needs & Awareness Working Group
Purpose Statement
The Disability Needs & Awareness Working Group (DNA-WG) aims to educate and empower communities to serve and assist those afflicted with disabilities. This will be done through research and identification of available accessible solutions in order to increase quality of life for disabled individuals within the ethical framework grounded in Islamic tradition.
DNA-WG Projects
- Submission of Chapter Proposals for Disability: Insights from Across Fields and Around the World, Volumes I, II and III published by the Praeger Press as follows:
- “Disability in Islam”
- Co-authors: Isra Bhatty, Mona Amer, Asad Ali Moten and Mobin Tawakkul
- Summary: An overview of Islamic view on illness and disability as seen via the lens of primary sources of Islamic tradition: Quran and Hadiths. This chapter will also entail the investigation of historical and contemporary examples of how Islamic law and society treat individuals with mental, physical and sensory disabilities.
- “Mosaic Reflections of American Muslims on Disability: Challenges & Solutions
- Co-authors: Mobin Tawakkul, Isra Bhatty and Mohammed Yousuf
- Summary: Three diverse experiential narratives of challenges of adapting to community life as well as solutions to implement for the American Muslim community will be outlined through Mr. Tawakkul who is deaf, Ms. Bhatty will be discussing disability accomodation and education in the Muslim community and Mr. Yousuf’s physical disability caused by polio.
