Health Affordability Initiative
American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) kicked off its first round of events in our year long Health Affordability Initiative with participation in Cover the Uninsured week, a national initiative through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Events were held in six cities across the country including Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Houston, and Southern California. Washington D.C.
Universal Care: Yes, we can? Held at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center on March 24th. Guest speakers Kathleen Stoll, Deputy Executive Director at Families USA and Dr. Harvey Fernbach, co-chair of the DC Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) discussed the current crisis and the case for single payer coverage.
New York City
NYC Covering the Uninsured: Universal Healthcare: Hope or Hype? Held on March 22nd at the Hartley House in Manhattan.
Anaheim, CA
AMHP co-sponsored an event on March 22nd with the Islamic Institute of Orange County in Anaheim, California. Guest speaker Dr. Don McCanne, the Senior Health Policy Fellow at PNHP focused his talk on the single payer system.
Chicago
Chicago’s event was co-hosted with the Inner-city Muslim Action Network (IMAN) Clinic, on March 28, 2009. Keynote speaker, Dr. Quentin Young of PNHP highlighted the importance and economic benefit and feasibility of a national single payer system.
Houston
On March 28th, Shifa Clinic of Houston and AMHP held an enrollment event organized by Children's Defense Fund of Houston. Nearly 22 individuals were registered for medical coverage.
Rancho Cucamonga, CA
The Community Discussion on Health Reform was held during a health fair at the Islamic Center of Inland Empire (ICIE). Keynote speaker Prof. Dora Barilla of Loma Linda University School of Public Health led a discussion on the need for reforming health and healthcare systems.
