Mahmood Abdul Hai, MD

Dr. Hai graduated from the Prince of Wales Medical College with distinction in Anatomy and Surgery in 1969 and obtained a Masters in Surgery (MS) from Patna University in 1972. After teaching in the Department of Anatomy for a year, Dr. Hai proceeded to USA and completed his Surgical Residency in Boston and a Urology Residency in Detroit in 1978. In 1994 he was awarded the Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons. He is a member of many professional organizations including the American Urological Association, The Societe Internationale D’Urologie, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, Islamic Medical Association of North America and many others.

Dr. Hai has practiced urology for 31 years and has been internationally known for his research on Green Light Laser for the treatment of Benign Prostate enlargement (BPH). He has taught hundreds of urologists around the world and his laser procedure has now been internationally accepted as the gold standard for the treatment of BPH. He has authored several chapters in books and numerous journal publications. Currently he is the Director of the Surgical Institute of Michigan and President of Affiliates in Urology in Westland, Michigan.

Besides his academic achievements, Dr. Hai has tirelessly worked on many projects for the betterment of the community and humanity at large. He is a founder member of the Hai Medicare Research Institute (HMRI), a 500 bed hospital project in Bihar, India and has served on the Board of Trustees of several national and international philanthropic organizations including Dar-Al-Islam, Unity Production Foundation etc. In 1988 he founded the Michigan Education Council which runs a 500 students Islamic school in Canton, Michigan. Dr. Hai has been involved with many community projects and is currently the Chairman of the Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO of Michigan).  In recognition of his work, The Institute for Social Policy and Understanding gave him the distinguished “Award for Philanthropy" in Dec. 2007. In 2009 he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the Association of Surgeons of India.
