LA Networking Event

CA: November 21, 2009: The 3rd AMHP Networking Banquet was
recently held in a prestigious venue in Yorba
Linda. The event attracted a diverse group of
healthcare professionals, physicians, dentists, pharmacists, academics, clinic
organizers, young interns, attorneys and health business professionals. This year's theme was "Networking for
Change: United We Serve," inspired by President Obama's message. The attendees were entertained by Ali Qazi of the
band Project 26 with songs from Yusuf Islam's Album, Father and Son.
Among the distinguished guests was Bill Hedrick, a
Congressional candidate from California's
44th District, who's been a great champion of health reform. He illustriously demonstrated the importance of
health reform and management in the United States and commended the
efforts of AMHP. The highlight of the day was the acknowledgement
of Mr. Saab Mirza, the oldest serving volunteer/employee of any Muslim Clinic
to date. He is an 86-year-old gentleman
who is the lead administrator at Al-Shifa Free Clinic in San Bernadino, CA.
His words of wisdom inspired the audience and motivated the young and the old.

Pro-Public Option Candlelight Vigil on the Hill Draws Large Numbers

On Tuesday, December 8th, nearly 150 advocates gathered in a park in front of the Capitol to voice strong support of the public insurance option. American Muslim Health Professionals' member, Khizer Husain, spoke of the "moral and fiscal responsibility" for the Senate to pass a strong public option.
He reminded the group about the commitment lawmakers made at the being of the year to enact comprehensive healthcare reform that "expands access and controls costs". Several Senators and Representatives shared their support and encouraged the diverse group to hold their colleagues accountable. In addition to AMHP, the event was sponsored by the National Physicians Alliance, HCAN, Campaign for America's Future, MoveOn, NAACP, Doctors Council of DC/NUHHCE/AFSCME, United Church of Christ, United Methodist Church General Board of Church and Society, Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, DC for Obama and others. | |

Member ProfileSaab Uncle Saab Mirza is an 86 year old, ex-British- Indian military disciplinarian, who is the oldest serving individual (employee plus volunteer) of any Muslim Free Clinic.
Only 8 months ago after falling down and nearly breaking his hip, he was back at Al-Shifa Clinic, leaving us in awe of his level of commitment. More than anyone else, AMHP felt that Saab Mirza deserved recognition and award for his dedication. Saab Mirza commitment and dedication had previously gone unrecognized by local and national groups and AMHP believed it was time to recognize this hidden gem.
Saab Mirza always says that the sixth pillar of Islam is "dedication and devotion". When audience members at the AMHP L.A. Networking luncheon heard him speak, there was no one in the room who was not moved.

Clinic ProfileAl Shifa Clinic
Al- Shifa Clinic is located in an impoverished neighborhood in San Bernardino, California. Free medical services are available Wednesday through Saturday by a team of dedicated Muslim physicians and volunteers. Al-Shifa is a shining example of how Islamic teachings of compassion towards the sick and selfless service to those in need, are molded into everyday practice.
Al-Shifa Clinic was established when clinic founders located a modular building that the County of San Bernardino was about to dismantle and relocated it to an acre of land in a poor neighborhood of San Bernardino. With the help of funds raised from the community and seed money from founding members, the unit was relocated, retro-fitted to meet current codes, and a parking lot was built. The Clinic is approximately 5,000 square feet and includes 19 examination rooms, a medical library, two waiting rooms, two nurses station, conference room, reception suite, and administrative and physicians offices.
