Message from the Board

Assalaamu Alaikum,

As many of you are aware, AMHP has been engaged in the healthcare reform debate that has been going on for over a year.  In this time, and even prior to President Obama taking office, we have been passionately working for change in the American healthcare system.  This effort, which culminated earlier this week with the passage of the healthcare bill, was spearheaded by the Health Affordability Taskforce (now Health Policy Taskforce).  Members of this taskforce and others have been working tirelessly on educating members about healthcare reform and encouraging civic engagement, as well as directly engaging with decision makers to make our positions known.

As recognition of AMHP's support for change, we were invited by the White House to attend the celebration that followed the signing of the bill.  Dr. Faisal Qazi, who has been instrumental in public engagement around healthcare reform, attended this historic event.  With healthcare reform legislation passed, now the real works begins and we hope that AMHP will have a seat at the table.  This year the Health Policy Taskforce, led by Sameer Siddiqi, will continue to engage in developing policy positions as well as engage various governmental agencies in the implementation phase of healthcare reform.  For those interested in this taskforce, Sameer can be reached at ssiddiqi@amhp.us

With all of the work ahead of us, AMHP realizes that we cannot do it without your support. Therefore, AMHP's leadership hopes that you will join us to continue our work toward achieving our vision "to be a leader in improving public health, through efforts inspired by faith." I would ask that anyone who believes in our vision to become actively engaged in the organization and provide whatever assistance you are able to. As Muslim health professionals, we need to fulfill our civic responsibilities in improving the health status of the communities we live in.

Walikum Assalaam,

mHealth Reform- What It Really Means
Sameer Siddiqi

dc capital

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act greatly improves the nation's public health system through a series of provisions focused primarily on health insurance reform, expansion of existing federal programs and investment in emerging health infrastructure. Although additional changes are still necessary, the new law is a monumental step in the right direction, as it will extend coverage to over 30 million Americans and dramatically improve the affordability and quality of health care. With regards to the concerns of AMHP's members, the law will significantly increase funding for community health centers, require data collection on minority communities, expand minority workforce development programs, and provide coverage for preventive health services.

What changes should I expect this year?

Although a bulk of the law's most important provisions (health exchanges, mandates, Medicaid expansion, and insurance regulation) will come into effect in 2014, a number of meaningful changes will begin as early as this year, including:

· Dependents under 26 can remain on their parents'
  insurance

· Medicare beneficiaries that fall into the "donut hole" will
receive assistance to pay for prescription drugs

· Children with pre-existing conditions will no longer be
  discriminated in obtaining insurance coverage

What will AMHP do in the meantime?

AMHP will work with its nonprofit partners and the United States Department of Health and Human Services to develop and disseminate information regarding implementation through guides, community forums, issue briefs, and workshops. By equipping its members with vital information regarding complex provisions like state health exchanges and Medicaid expansion, AMHP will ensure that thousands of patients and public health stakeholders are better informed. AMHP will also proactively work with state and federal to ensure that provisions affecting American Muslims are implemented fairly and reasonably.

AMHP Participates in Health Reform March in D.C.

                   seiu march

On Monday, March 22nd, AMHP joined an array of leading health professional organizations in Washington, DC to express the public health community's approval and support for meaningful health care reform. Over 300 physicians, nurses, medical students, and industry professionals from around the nation participated in the historic march. The event was followed by a press conference on Capitol Hill, with appearances by key Congressional House and Senate members. Despite heavy rain, turnout was on-target and the general attitude was especially positive. AMHP is thrilled to have had an opportunity to work with Doctors for America, National Physicians Alliance, and an array of other organizations in organizing the march.

Additionally, AMHP members present for the march spent much of the day meeting with key policy makers and allies in Washington, DC, including the Islamic Society of North America, White House Office of Public Engagement, Department of Health and Human Services Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and a number of Congressional offices. AMHP hopes to continue to develop these relationships into meaningful collaborative opportunities for our members.
